CLIMATE NORMALS UPDATE, October 1, 2002

NORMALS USED FOR CLIMATOLOGICAL MESSAGES ARE NOW UTILIZING DATA
BASED ON 1971-2000 INFORMATION FOR MAXIMUM, MINIMUM, NORMAL,
COOLING DEGREE DAYS, HEATING DEGREE DAYS, PRECIPITATION AND SNOWFALL.
TABLES REFLECTING THE NORMALS FOR 1971-2000 AND 1961-1990 ARE DEPICTED
HERE FOR COMPARISON.

CLIMATOLOGICAL NORMALS FOR THE PERIOD 1971-2000, PRODUCED BY THE
NATIONAL CLIMATIC DATA CENTER HAVE BEEN RECOMPUTED AS OF OCTOBER 1, 2002
AND WILL BE UTILIZED STARTING OCTOBER 1, 2002. DISCREPANCIES, WHICH APPEARED
FROM COMPUTERIZED SMOOTHING AND ANALYTICAL COMPUTATIONS HAVE BEEN CORRECTED.
MONTHLY AVERAGES AND SUMS NOW REFLECT THE COMPUTED DAILY NORMAL VALUES IN
ALL CATEGORIES. THIS RECOMPUTATION CHANGED THE MONTHLY PRECIPITATION VALUE
FOR MAY FROM 4.35 TO 4.36. DAILY SNOWFALL NORMALS WHICH WERE PREVIOUSLY
COMPUTED LOCALLY HAVE NOW BEEN COMPUTED BY THE DATA CENTER. MONTHLY AND
DAILY VALUES HAVE CHANGED AND A TRACE VALUE FOR SNOWFALL HAS BEEN ADDED.
